Is a Water Birth Right for You?

Water birth allows a mother to ease the pains of labor and delivery by sitting in a pool of water. To the baby, the delivery might compare to the way it feels in a mother’s womb. This method of labor and delivery has it's pros and cons, and every individual is different. If you are considering a water birth, talk to your doctor first to learn more.

Is Water Birth Safe?

For the most part water birth is safe, but there are some risks that need to be considered.

The first is an increased risk for infections. This occurs with improperly sanitizing the tub from one birth to another. It can also be caused by bacteria in the water. Properly cleaning the pool and then disinfecting it before the next use will prevent this from happening. The water will probably need to be tested and treated in order to eliminate the bacteria from being in the water at the time of birth.

Another problem that may occur with a water birth is slower labor. Of course sitting in a warm pool of water is very relaxing, which is good for you. The problem is that it might be too relaxing and slow down the progress of labor.

Only special birthing facilities will cater to a water birth. Hospitals usually don’t offer this method of delivery. You can consider having a water birth at a birthing center or in your home using a small inflatable pool that is big enough for you and baby. In order to give birth at home you must be considered a low risk pregnancy.

Water birth is very useful in decreasing the pains from labor, including lower back pain. This helps the mom-to-be gain control over the labor process. It is also beneficial because it may result in less tearing during birth. The way the water takes the pressures off of your stomach will make you more comfortable during your delivery.

So how do you prepare for a water birth? Attend a water exercise program for pregnant women. You will get use to being in the water and moving around with your pregnant body. You will learn how your muscles will feel under the precious liquid and how to relax and breathe properly in water.

If you have high blood pressure, diabetes or are carrying multiple babies you will not be able to have a water birth because of the risk involved in your delivery. If you have had a non-complicated pregnancy then there shouldn’t be any trouble to having a water birth.

Choosing a birthing center for your water birth

Most birthing centers are especially created for that special moment in a woman’s life. That is why birthing centers will offer more ways to deliver your baby. There are birthing beds, chairs and water births available.

Before your due date take a trip to a birthing center to make sure that a water birth is really what you want. The staff can explain the process to you and you can see if you are comfortable with it. When it is your time to deliver, you will appreciate the information.
