How To Have A Healthy Pregnancy

There are several things that you can do to ensure a healthy pregnancy. Prenatal care is the best place to start. During a prenatal visit you doctor can determine your overall health. He or she can estimate how well the baby is growing by measuring your belly and listening to the heartbeat.

Your doctor may recommend certain tests each month to ensure that everything is going just right. These tests may include an ultrasound or blood work. They may also check for pregnancy induced diabetes around 28 weeks. Every prenatal visit will include your weight check, blood pressure check and listening for the heartbeat.

Prenatal visits will be once per month until the eighth month. After that your visits will continue every other week and then eventually every week until you deliver. Of course if you have any complications your doctor will see you more often.

Another way to have a healthy pregnancy is to eat healthy. Now you are eating for two so it’s important to get the right amount of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to balance your system. You will need to take a prenatal vitamin to keep both you and your little one healthy. Your doctor may refer you to a dietician, which can help you plan a healthy menu that will give you and your baby everything you will need.

When it comes to taking any medications and drugs during pregnancy you will need to talk to your doctor. If you take a prescription medication, your doctor may need to prescribe a safer alternative to take during your pregnancy. Your gynecologist will let you know what foods you need to avoid during pregnancy.

Coffee, tea or soft drinks, may contain caffeine, which is unsafe for your body at this point. Some chocolates contain caffeine as well as some over-the-counter medication. Caffeine can cause several problems as well as being addictive. If you do consume food, drinks or over-the-counter medications that include caffeine do it in moderation. Remember that your baby will get the caffeine too.

The same rules that apply to caffeine also apply to over the counter medicines, alchohol and smoke. If you have any questions at all about what is acceptable and what is not, talk to you doctor right away.

Exercise is another way you can have a healthy pregnancy. Taking a pregnancy yoga class or prenatal exercise class can give you a safe workout in a group setting. You can receive and give the support you need to succeed in your exercise program. Discuss exercising with your doctor before you begin.

Exercise during pregnancy can increase your blood circulation and keep your muscles stretched and flexible so as your baby grows and your body stretches your exercise will pay off. During labor and delivery you will be able to relax your muscles allowing for an easier labor. The pelvic and abdomen will benefit from your exercise because you have been working to strengthen these muscles.

Make sure you don’t try to do too much, work at it slowly. You have several months to prepare for your delivery and if you overdo it you may have to spend some time on bed rest while your body heals. Drink plenty of fluids while exercising to replenish any that you perspire. It’s easy to dehydrate when you are pregnant.

Last but not least, make sure you get plenty of rest. When you rest your body can concentrate on your pregnancy. If you are not used to napping, sit down and put your feet up as you watch television or read a book. When your baby arrives you will appreciate any rest you can get.
